In a year of constant change the Cardinal Crew kept their eyes on the prize – collecting three medals at the WMIRA Championships while the Varsity Girls advanced to the Semi-Finals in the Senior 8+ event for the first time in school history.
In Head Coach Eric’s first year, the program revamped their off-season programs and training intensity to match their lofty goals for the Spring. Under the new program rowers on both sides competed well and placed high at the home-site Bishop Ireton Erg Invite and the Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints.
Early in the spring, the team defended their ownership of the Cindy Cole Cup overall trophy and Men’s trophy. The Cardinals also swept the Bishops Cup trophies as the Girls Varsity 8+ finished the regularĀ season undefeated and the Boys’ Varsity 8+ finished 2nd or higher in every regatta.
Individually, Senior Olivia Babiec (’11) was awarded First Team All-Metropolitan by the Washington Post – the second athlete to do so from BI Crew and the first one from the girl’s team ever. Sophomore Kevin Shoop (’13) was invited to train with the Junior National Team Development Camp in Pittsburgh during the summer of 2011.
